We don’t usually take into consideration how long appliances last until they stop working. While no appliance is going to last forever, each type of appliance has an average expected lifespan.
What You Need to Know About How Long Appliances Last
If your refrigerator is not cold enough or your cooking range isn’t heating properly, you may be wondering if your appliances have reached the end of their useful life. Here is a list of common household appliances and their average lifespans.
1. How Long Appliances Last: Gas and Electric Ranges
Gas ranges are expected to have the longest lifespan of any other kitchen appliance. Lasting upwards of 15 years, gas ranges last a bit longer than their electric counterparts that last around 13 years. The hood of the range should last to last up to 14 years.
2. Refrigerators
Most standard fridges are expected to last 13 years. Compact refrigerators tend to last nine years. While you can put off replacing the fridge until it stops working completely, it is a better idea to replace it when you notice it is struggling to maintain a constant temperature. Refrigerators with Energy Star labels use 15% less energy. Instead of waiting for your older fridge to give out, replace it with a more energy efficient model.
3. Freezers
In the case of a separate freezer, chest and upright freezer models tend to last between 11 and 20 years. To get the most out of your freezer, purchase a model that is designed to automatically defrost. If not, be sure to manually defrost your freezer regularly so that it doesn’t accumulate more than ¼ inch of ice.
4. Dishwashers
Homeowners often don’t research how long appliances last when it comes time to purchase a new dishwasher. The best dishwasher models are energy efficient, giving homeowners significant savings in water and energy. However, these models only have a lifespan of around nine years. New dishwashers use about 4.25 gallons less water when compared to older models.
5. Microwave Ovens
While microwave ovens are the kings of convenience, they don’t have very long lifespans. Lasting anywhere between five and 10 years, microwaves need to be replaced more frequently than other household appliances.
6. Washing Machines
When researching how long appliances last, you’ll find that washing machines have an average lifespan of 10 years. A way to extend your washer’s lifespan is to only wash full loads. The fewer times the washer runs, the longer the lifespan.
